Case Study: Broadcast

BroadcastThe team from Rock Kitchen Harris have done a great job re-branding MailBuild to create Broadcast. They've even gone as far as creating branded demo videos showcasing the app in action on their own site. We sat down with Paul Sculthorpe, senior web developer at RKH to ask how the re-branding has been going, plus any tips he can share for other MailBuilder's customers considering going down the same path.

What gave you the idea to re-brand MailBuild?

"We had spent weeks creating an in house version Broadcast, but it took us about 10 minutes to switch to MailBuild, and another 10 to rebrand it as our own."

Broadcast started out with the idea of using Campaign Monitor's excellent API, building our own interface and management on top of that. When we were 99% of the way there, you released MailBuild! After we sent you an email calling you bastards, we quickly realised that MailBuild was a better solution :)

The Broadcast site is great, how did you come up with it?

Screenshot of the Broadcast web siteWe're a full-service agency, with advertising design and PR departments. A designer had already worked up the logo and brand for a printed brochure promoting Broadcast.

We just adapted that into a simple website, swapping out Broadcast v1 screenshots with rebranded MailBuild ones.

How are you promoting your email services to existing customers?

"We've created a set of templates for a fictional Kitchen company that we use to demonstrate Broadcast."

Along with printed leaflets, we've made the website and added video demos showing Broadcast in action. They really help some of our less tech-savvy clients to understand exactly what it is and how it works.

Live demos work the best though, we've created a set of templates for a fictional Kitchen company that we use to demonstrate Broadcast. It's a great reminder when the client gets back to their desk and finds the actual email we demo'd waiting in their inbox!

How are you trying to attract new customers?

Right now we're aiming purely at our existing clients, although looking at other MailBuild case studies, I think we'll be promoting to a wider audience sooner than anticipated!

What have the results been - has it been an easy sell?

"It has been very easy to sell once a client sees it in action."

It has been very easy to sell once a client sees it in action. I think a few have used other systems in the past, and are wary because they have had a poor experience, either from sending, or from receiving worthless spam.

Our clients trust us and are willing to pay for excellent templates and assistance where they need it.

Any advice for other designers considering reselling MailBuild?

Don't undersell it! Just because MailBuild is so inexpensive doesn't mean that your clients won't be willing to pay a bit more for your support and a reliable and trustworthy service.

We actually tried to fault MailBuild, but we couldn't. You guys have obviously put a lot of thought into how the system would be used and re-branded.
