Template: Grow Wellington Newsletter

Posted by Mathew Patterson on March 6, 2008 4:04 PM

See the complete email designHaving just visited Wellington myself for Webstock myself, I was glad to this newsletter for Grow Wellington. It's aim is to "drive growth in exports, to help create a strong and vibrant Wellington regional economy".

There's a lot of content to cover, and this template is clean, readable and effective. The colours are bright without being distracting, and overall it does a great job of getting the information across, and presenting the next step for readers to take.

See the complete email designOur customer template today sports some beautiful graphical touches that create a unique email design.

Particularly effective is the alternate background for the main story leading to the repeating section below. Note the custom "show this to my mate" image link, carrying through the fun personality from the website to the email. Overall, a great template that has a sense of completeness to it.

See the complete email designA rich and luxurious feel for this newsletter perfectly matches the emails content.

Great use of icons for each header make it a breeze to browse and spot the sections your are interested in, and it is all in all a well executed piece of email design.

See the complete email designWhen you are dealing with a large amount of text in an email, your template needs to be carefully designed so as not to create an overwhelming effect.

This template by Brisbane based design firm Propeller is simply but thoughtfully built. We particularly like the web version, forward to a friend and unsubscribe links right up front, and the effective use of the table of contents to jump into the long copy sections.

See the complete email designDesigning for a government department would create some unique challenges! This is a nicely constructed and attractive corporate design from the New Zealand Ministry for the Envrionment.

The typography is nice and clean, and we really like the strong header and footer that give the reader a quick way of identifying the email. An excellent design that feels contemporary without being flashy.

Template: Texture

Posted by Mathew Patterson on August 24, 2007 1:05 PM

See the complete email designA delicious design for the "interactive community of the best Wellington businesses, events, bars, shops, cafes and restaurants" known as texture.

Very rich colours and some nice worn graphical touches feature in the design, and it all works well to strengthen the brand. Our suggestion would be to make the header a link to the main website - it's an obvious place to click.

See the complete email designAnother great design from the Rawnet team is today's customer gallery entry.

The big, bold heading is in actual text, although it looks like an image, which is the best of both worlds. We are also impressed with the soft colour palette and graphical touches supporting the email content. This combination would still hold together very well without images loaded, important for a design agency.

See the complete email designThis sleek newsletter and tour schedule for the musician Larissa Ness makes good use of a simple two column structure.

The informational text above the header is an excellent practice - even if the images are not showing it lets you know who is sending the email. It's great design, but we'd suggest adding the permission reminder to the top too, that explains how people signed up.

Template: White label dating

Posted by Mathew Patterson on July 31, 2007 3:26 PM

See the complete email designWhite label dating is not, as you might think, being able to go on pre-prepared dates and swapping in your partner of choice.

In fact, it is a service/application provider to dating sites, and their newsletter has a cool and professional appeal to it (unlike many dates!). The general feel matches the idea of a well designed but rebrandable service very nicely.

See the complete email designA simple and friendly design that is very recognisable is today's entry.

We love the hand drawn feel for this design, which could easily be the basis for many types of message. One simple recommended improvement would be to style the unsubscribe link to match the content.

See the complete email designA clean, attractive conference inviation /newsletter is today's gallery entry.

The email header is a variant on the main website but is used to good effect with the webversion link and unsubscribe info. We'd like to see that footer as html instead of an image though.

We also like the heading typography, which breaks up the sections and ties into the logo nicely.

Rainshadow Labs is a manufacturer of personal care products, and their newsletter is an attractive combination of informative and personal. We like the way that the structured content boxes are offset by the organic background images.

The use of peoples in the photos gives a much more human feel than the typical manufacturing newsletter, something which matches the companies approach to business.

Matching your design to the service it is discussing is a key skill in creating a successful email campaign. Today's gallery item from Milos Radovic for the Hotel Säntispark in Abtwil, Switzerland, displays this beautifully.

Milos makes use of clean lines and a subtle color palette to design an email that feels as professional and sophisticated as the hotel's own photos do. Even though it is not in English, the layout and structure make it simple to understand.

See the complete email designWe instantly fell in love with this slick email newsletter from UK based Code.

The table of contents placement is fantastic design wise and to give their recipients a good idea what to expect from preview panes. The fantastic illustrations really add a fun feel to the design which is clean, easy to read and very consistent with their recently updated web site.

We've been seeing more and more clever uses of the template tag structure, and this is a great example of a simple but flexible repeater layout that looks great with a little or a lot of content.

Template: Womenspecific.com Newsletter

Posted by David Greiner on November 14, 2006 3:24 PM

See the complete email designToday we're highlighting a fantastic MailBuild template for Womenspecific.com, a women’s gear and camp review site designed by Wyoming based Open End Studios.

I loved the idea of using floating blocks of content for each repeater item in the template. This creates a great visual separation between each story and also makes the email very easy for their recipients to scan. The template also makes good use of the Table of Contents, Forward to a Friend and web version tags.

This template is also another great example of a CSS based design that looks great in modern email clients and degrades gracefully in older email environments or those with less CSS support.

The template design makes great use of the range of tags available in MailBuild. The design is also completely CSS based and looks great in all email environments, even those such as Gmail where it elegantly degrades into a much simpler design.

With this awesome design and the already featured River City Church template, Livingston and Partners really are setting the standards high for what you can do with MailBuild.

See the complete email designToday we're featuring a great looking MailBuild template put together by Eye Design Studio for the Russian River Valley based Ottimino winery.

The newsletter makes great use of the repeater tag (although this particular issue only has one main story) and the subtle decorative elements throughout really finish it off.

This is also a great example of good use of the Forward to a Friend tag in the footer of the email to encourage recipients to pass the newsletter on to their own friends/colleagues.

Template: River City Church

Posted by David Greiner on September 14, 2006 4:28 PM

See the complete email designToday we're highlighting a fantastic looking email template designed by Florida based Livingston and Partners for River City Church.

Originally sent using Campaign Monitor, the design team have seamlessly converted it to a great looking MailBuild template the church can update and deliver themselves. Here's a few of the design elements they get right:

  • Link to a web-based version of the email in the header.
  • All important headlines and links are text and not images.
  • The most compelling content to encourage an open (the newsletters highlights) are in the top left, great for preview panes.
  • They ask their recipients to add their sending email address to their address book to improve the chances of images being displayed and the campaign not being filtered as spam.

If you're looking for any inspiration when designing templates for your clients, this is a great place to start.

Template: Springfest Lawn Party

Posted by David Greiner on August 23, 2006 12:05 PM

See the complete email designToday we're highlighting a simple email template for the Australian Jockey Club's Springfest Lawn Party.

The design includes a larger introductory section followed by smaller repeating items for the main stories of the newsletter. These stories also populate a table of contents in the top left of the email. The designers have also included quick links to relevant information on the Springfest site.

From personal experience I can say that Springfest is definitely something worth promoting and this email does a great job of doing just that.

Template: The Eclectic Eye

Posted by David Greiner on August 17, 2006 2:07 PM

See the complete email designJust like the ever growing Campaign Monitor design gallery, we plan to use the MailBuild blog to showcase some of the amazing template designs our customers are creating for their clients.

To get this party started, we're highlighting a great template by Tennessee based Inferno for their client Eclectic Eye.

The great looking 2 column template allows their clients to enter one main story and a number of upcoming events their customers might be interested in. We also loved the idea of giving their recipient's a 10% discount on their next purchase if they print the newsletter and bring it in to the store.

We've got plenty more templates to highlight, so stay tuned.
